Pierre: Advanced Masters in Pyrotechnics and Propulsion

What was your educational background prior to ENSTA Bretagne?

"I did a technology degree and then a preparatory class in technology. I did my co-op engineering degree, majoring in mechanical engineering, at the Ecole des Arts et Métiers in Châlons-en-Champagne." 

Why did you choose ENSTA Bretagne for your Advanced Master's degree?

"Because of my passion. Ever since I was a kid, I've been passionate about pyrotechnics and propulsion. I've done lots of experiments, for example building a mini rocket.  It seemed only natural to apply for this Advanced Master's degree and try to link my passion and my career. It's worth noting that it's the only French program that fully encompasses these two fields."

What did you think of your year of training?

"It was really positive, because I made my choices with purpose, as much in the school context, with the Advanced Masters and Research Masters (a double degree with ISAE-ENSMA), as in my internship.  I finished my Advanced Master's degree by working for the company that I'd wanted to join (Airbus Safran Launchers) even before I enrolled in the pyrotechnics and propulsion major. This year of training caps off my educational experience and has allowed me to take a first step in the sector I want to work in: space propulsion."

Outside of class, did you participate in extra-curricular activities organized by the Student Union or sports clubs?

"I signed up at the school gym so I could use the equipment there. I met lots of people through the gym during our weekly workouts."

Were you familiar with this area before coming here, and did you enjoy life in Brest?

"I didn't know Brest at all before this year, and I have to say I liked it. Living downtown was great because of all the nearby stores (for groceries and shopping), restaurants, movie theaters and the big university library. Also, the streetcar line made getting to school really easy, so I didn't have to use my car at all during my 6 months at ENSTA."

Do you have any job leads?

"I have several leads in the field of space propulsion and I plan on staying in that sector.  But before making any commitments, I'd like to follow a dream of mine and plan a trip directly related to space."

Would you recommend ENSTA Bretagne and this program?

 "I recommend this program to all those who are passionate about pyrotechnics and propulsion and who want to acquire a solid knowledge base in those fields and make contacts that can help them on their career path. At this school you meet top-quality visiting lecturers who can show you how to apply your skills in a wide variety of areas and build your career." 

Any last words of advice?

"Be curious and get involved! Don't hesitate to talk to visiting lecturers. They're there for your benefit, even if they're not directly involved in the sector you think you'd like to work in later. Those discussions will help to confirm or better define your career path. It's one of the strong points of this program, so take advantage!"
