Women’s sport: 5 association presidents share their passion

Student Life
On International Women’s Sports Day (January 24), five presidents of women’s sports associations at ENSTA Bretagne present their association and share their love of sport.
ENSTA Bretagne : rugby féminin

Women’s rugby association

Rugby is an exciting sport as the conditions it is played in aren’t always easy (weather). It really tests your body through the intensity of the effort and contact with other players.

This means that a sense of team spirit forms very quickly and the girls form a close-knit group!

There are more and more of us joining this sports association. So this year we had planned to be supported by a certified coach. Unfortunately, with competitions put on hold, we have had to postpone these plans… We’re staying in touch while waiting to be able to meet up again. We have just ordered a sweatshirt for the team emblazoned with the saying “Le jeu en vaut la chandelle” (The game is worth the candle).

ENSTA Bretagne : Handball féminin

Women’s handball association

This year was distinctive in that the women’s handball association merged with the men’s handball association for the training sessions and tournaments. This will increase the numbers attending the training sessions and provide diversity. All of the members practice at their level so as to make progress.

The number of girls in this association has fallen over recent years, giving us a new challenge for this year and the years to come: boosting the women’s sports association again. For that, we can count on our coach Mathilde – who always has new exercises up her sleeve for us, to enable everyone to progress at their own pace – as well as the men’s team: they are always full of encouragement and it’s always enjoyable playing alongside them.

ENSTA Bretagne : basket-ball féminin

Women’s basketball association

There’s a real sense of "family" about the women’s basketball association, everyone is welcome. Every year, lots of beginners join the group. The atmosphere during training sessions and matches is really friendly.

Usually we train twice a week, so for a total of four hours, and take part in a wide range of competi-tions. Our coach is a professional coach – he adapts to all levels to give everyone a chance to progress.

ENSTA Bretagne : volley féminin

Women’s volleyball association

Women’s volleyball is a thriving sports association which recruits lots of players every year – whether or not they are beginners. Team cohesion is rock-solid and the weapon that sets us apart!  We are lucky to have a skilled and motivated coach, a former elite player, who’s always there for her players.

Every year we achieve performances to be proud of: 1st place in the Sports Tournament of the Graduate Schools for Defense (TSGED) in 2019, 4th place in the French Championships of Graduate Schools in 2019, and qualifying for the finals of these championships in 2020.

ENSTA Bretagne : football féminin

Women’s football association

There are more and more of us signing up to play women’s football every year at ENSTA Bretagne. For this season, there are thirty or so of us (students from three cohorts and even a PhD student!), which sets the stage for a great atmosphere within the team!

Our club’s strength is that there are lots of beginners, so nothing to be ashamed of! I had never played football before, myself.

In normal times, we would train twice a week with Julien and Jany, both members of the men’s football association. Other members also regularly take part in our training sessions, which enables us to make tremendous progress.

All of these sports associations are part of ENSTA Bretagne’s Sports Association. There are some thirty clubs belonging to this association, all very different, to enable students to play sport as just a hobby or at competition level.
