ENSTA Bretagne : Otavio et Vanessa, doctorants primés

Two PhD students in mechanical engineering win awards

Last June and July, Vanessa Kwiatkowski and Otávio Zimmermann De Almeida, both PhD students at IRDL/ENSTA Bretagne were awarded for the quality of their posters. Their work is part of the "Self Heating" industrial chair, which aims to predict the damage and endurance of materials by measuring their thermal signature.

Best poster award at the Safran PhD student days

Organized on June 9-10, 2022 at Safran Aircraft Engines - Villaroche, the Safran PhD student days brought together around 30 PhD students. On this occasion, Vanessa Kwiatkowski's poster entitled "Thermomechanical analysis of the high cycle fatigue behavior of a PEEK CF30 under compressive loadings" received the best poster award selected from some fifteen posters.

Vanessa Kwiatkowski is a third-year PhD student at IRDL (PTR5) / ENSTA Bretagne, under a CIFRE contract with Safran Landing Systems as part of the "Self-Heating" ANR industrial chair.

Her work aims to acquire data and knowledge and develop methods and tools to predict the fatigue life at a large number of cycles (several million) of a composite material (PEEK thermoplastic matrix reinforced with short carbon fibers). The latter is subjected to cyclic compressive loading. It is intended for aircraft landing gear.

This was the first time I participated in the Safran PhD student Days. During these two days, oral presentations were given and posters submitted by PhD students. The audience included both PhD students and engineers and experts from the Safran group. Winning the best poster award gives weight to the work done during my thesis and highlights the "Self-Heating" industrial chair within the Safran group.

Best Poster award at the ACEX2022 International Conference

Otávio Zimmermann De Almeida is an ENSTA Bretagne graduate and a first-year PhD student at IRDL (PTR5) / ENSTA Bretagne, under a CIFRE contract with Safran Composites as part of the Self-Heating" ANR industrial chair.

He won the best poster award at the 15th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting which took place on July 3-7, 2022 in Florence (Italy), for his poster entitled "Thermomechanical characterization of unidirectional carbon fibers/epoxy laminate under cyclic compressive loading". Otavio's poster was selected from some 40 posters.

Like Vanessa, his work focuses on the development of methods and tools to predict the fatigue life of a material over a large number of cycles (several million). Otavio's material is a laminated composite made of plies comprising an Epoxy matrix and long carbon fibers. Intended for aircraft engine application parts, the material is subjected to cyclic compressive loading.

This conference was my first international experience as part of my thesis which started last February. The conference brought together participants from different European countries. This award shows the community's interest in the research work carried out within the Self-Heating chair. I share this award with the PTR 5 team and with my supervisors whom I would like to thank. I am very happy with this result, and motivated to get more positive feedback in my next communications.

As part of this industrial chair, which runs from 2020 to 2024, 8 PhD students, 4 post-doctorate students and 13 researchers are involved. The challenge for Safran is to use the self-heating method to predict the in-service performance of systems, and to use the most appropriate materials and assemblies for each context and each part of the aircraft system architecture.
