Mapping Guerlédan Lake
The students specializing in « Hydrography-Oceanography » carried out mapping of the manmade lake.
A visit to Guerlédan School at St Aignan
Several ENSTA Bretagne final year students gave the primary school pupils workshops on the theme of acoustics.
Numerous projects involving industry
In the photo, two robots from the Texys Marine company. Other partners are also involved: Kopadia, Geown as well as the Shom and l'Ifremer not forgetting EDF.
A radio program in English
Every evening, second year students produced a radio program « Planet Guerlédan » in English to practice explaining science in layman’s terms.
80 hydrography and robotics students join forces
The 2019/2020 edition will the largest in terms of participants. For the first time, it will receive 2nd year engineering students. Those who chose the Autonomous Robotics specialism, will join the 3rd year students in the “Hydrography-Oceanography” and “Robotics” specialisms.
"On air"
To promote the numerous projects conducted during this week of experiments, the 2nd year students will be behind the controls of an autonomous radio station dedicated to the event.
Every evening for 15 to 20 minutes, live and in English, they will go over the days main events. Devised by the English teachers, this scientific communication exercise represents a major challenge: mastery of the technology (production and materials), creation of a cue sheet, public speaking, time and stress management, team work…
Jeanne Toulouse, English teacher who devised the project:
We are not looking for perfection through this exercise, that’s why we chose to do this broadcast live. The objective is to work on communicating scientific subjects: succeed in relating all the work accomplished by the 3rd years in an intelligible way. It’s really not important if there is interference, spluttering and other gaffs.
On the water
Although the broadcast is one of the highlights in the 2nd year students’ day, most of their schedule is dedicated to lessons and experiments in real conditions.
ENSTA Bretagne has purchased about15 radio-controlled boats. They have been stripped back to the main structure and the embedded electronics have been totally redesigned by the team from the ICST department’s resource center.
In pairs, the students are to make their boats autonomous. At the end of the week, their boat has to navigate autonomously around a polygon-shaped course on the lake.
Study subjects responding to real needs
For the final year students, the week is dedicated to projects. Some of the study subjects have been proposed by partners such as the SHOM, Ifremer, IxBlue and EDF.
Another week of exploring the lake is planned for the beginning of February, which will enable the students to finish off, validate their data and test their robots’ algorithms.
